It is expected that ToF sensor will become a standard part for high-end smartphone

According to a report from MEMS Consulting, Infineon, a semiconductor manufacturing company from Germany believes that ToF sensor will become a standard part of high-end smartphone. This company indicates that ToF technology can solve the low light focusing problem when using phone to photograph.

The senior vice president of Infineon, Philipp von Schierstaedt, once said in an interview that Infineon would put its efforts and focus on 3D imaging and sensing development through ToF image sensors, since the use of ToF technology in high-end smartphone was an irresistible trend! ToF technology can project a modulated infrared light source (such as VCSEL, EEL, etc.) onto the object, person or scene we are interested in, then the reflected light will be captured by the ToF sensor which will measure the luminous intensity and phase difference captured by each pixel to generate a highly reliable depth image  and a grayscale image of the entire scene.

Philipp von Schierstaedt indicated that the application of 3D sensing technology in smartphone, which has tackled the challenges of new application to rear camera and has enabled 3D sensing technology to have some functional requirements that traditional 2D camera technology doesn’t have, made real and usable 3D depth map a realization.
Infineon and pmd‘s cooperation in the research and development of high-resolution ToF sensors (40K pixels) empowers the application of smartphone with measurement and augmented reality (AR)

“The new REAL3™ image sensor co-issued by Infineon and pmd provides best Image resolution and depth data for various kinds of 3D imaging and sensing applications.
The latest generation of 3D ToF image sensor of REAL3™ series is now overcoming the existing technological defects of ToF”, Philipp von Schierstaedt said, “ We firmly believe that Infineon’s new 3D ToF image sensor will expand new application types and enhance the user experience of existing applications.

The latest ToF imaging sensor released by Sony
Infineon will compete with Sony in terms of ToF image sensor research and development . According to a report from MEMS Consulting, Sony first launched a brand new ToF imaging sensor designed for industrial use recently. However, due to the fact that the version Mark II of Sony Xperia series 1 smartphone has already integrated ToF imaging sensor, Sony is well aware of the application value of ToF imaging sensor in consumer devices. In addition, Infineon's clear stance on the future prospects of ToF sensors has convinced people of the possibility of the widespread adoption of ToF technology.

Though there are still some people questioning the necessity of ToF technology in smartphones, it is a good thing for market in terms of the ongoing researches and developments of ToF technology. At present, the optimal application of auto-focusing technology which has a history of 40 years continues to prevail in smartphone market, as CMOS image sensors are getting smaller and smaller, resulting in poor low-light performance, while ToF technology enables smartphones to have a better low-light photo performance, which benefits users a lot! Looking ahead, there are “hidden treasures” of AR waiting to be explored.
